Workplace English




Workplace English for Professionals in Education 2016

 

Designed to meet the needs of professionals in education, this programme teaches the essential language and communication skills required for confident and successful interaction in the English language. The programme offers three courses targeting English for professional purposes to help develop language skills needed in the professional workplace.

The courses are as follows:

Name of Course

EP01 Workplace Oral Communication

Synopsis

This course is suitable for professionals who wish to develop effective communication skills in English in both professional and social contexts. The course focuses on practical skills such as participating in meetings and delivering effective presentations, as well as conducting small talk, extending professional hospitality, and entertaining visitors and guests at social functions.

Objectives

On successful completion of the course, the participant will gain confidence in managing workplace communication effectively. 

Specifically, the participant should be able to do the following:

1.     Improve daily conversation skills in both professional and social settings

2.     Conduct effective job interviews

3.     Participate confidently in meetings

4.     Prepare and deliver impactful presentations

Content Outline

1.   Art of Small Talk

In this unit, the participant will learn how to start a conversation, how to keep it going and how to end a conversation positively.

 

2.   Formal Conversation on Topical Issues

This unit will help the participant develop skills to conduct formal conversations in contexts related to educational issues. 

 

3.   Effective Telephone Skills

In this unit, the participant will learn how to develop a confident, structured and positive approach to telephone conversations.

 

4. Interviewing Skills

This unit will help the participant acquire skills to plan, structure and conduct interviews.

 

 5. Making Meetings Work: Participating in Meetings (1)

In this unit, the participant will learn how to participate actively in meetings; specifically, on how to pose questions and ask for clarifications.

 

6. Making Meetings Work: Participating in Meetings (2)

In this unit, the participant will learn how to participate actively in meetings; specifically, on how to offer (or ask for) suggestions and state opinions.

 

7.  Success with Presentations (1)

In this unit, the participant will learn how to prepare, organize and deliver effective presentations on specific topics.

 

8. Success with Presentations (2)

In this unit, the participant will be given the opportunity to deliver an informative presentation by applying the skills and techniques introduced in this course.

EP02 Workplace Written Communication

Synopsis

This course is designed to help leaders gain confidence in reading and writing for professional purposes. It enables the participant to acquire skills in managing common forms of written professional communication such as memos, letters, workplace reports, short notes and e-mail messages. The participant will learn how to use appropriate formats, styles, conventions, and tone, as well as receive guidance on how to write correct, clear, concise and persuasive sentences.

Objectives

On successful completion of the course, the participant will gain confidence in managing workplace communication effectively. 

Specifically, the participant should be able to do the following:

1.     Write grammatically correct sentences

2.     Write coherent paragraphs

3.     Use word forms appropriate to the writing task

4.     Write effective professional emails, memos, formal letters, press releases and reports

5.     Use a variety of strategies to read and comprehend authentic workplace documents

Content Outline

 

1: E-mail English

This unit will help the participant develop the skills and language structures needed to compose effective and professional email messages.

 

2: Writing on the Job

In this unit, the participant will learn to use effective action verbs and keywords to enhance workplace related writing, such as writing a resume and the accompanying cover letter.

 

3: Memo Writing for Professionals

In this unit, the participant will learn to write clear concise memos for professional purposes.

 

4: Formal Letter Writing

In this unit, the participant will learn how to write and structure letters for effective professional correspondence.

 

5: Writing for Press Release

In this unit, the participant will learn how to use simple and concise language to write press releases that clearly communicate the key messages.

 

6: Reading at Work

This unit will help the participant develop reading skills to scan for information, skim for overall meaning, and evaluate information when reading authentic workplace documents.

 

7: Report Review 1

This unit will help the participant develop reading strategies to maximize comprehension of a text.

 

8: Report Review 2

This unit will help the participant identify and summarise key elements of a text.

EP03 Professionally Speaking

Synopsis

This course is suitable for experienced executives who wish to improve their oral communication skills in a workplace context that requires a strong professional focus. This course allows the participant to practice a range of practical and professional skills, including how to lead discussions at meetings, develop an impressive presentation style, and deliver impactful speeches.

Objectives

On successful completion of the course, the participant will gain confidence in managing workplace communication effectively. 

Specifically, the participant should be able to do the following:

1.     Manage formal and informal meetings using appropriate grammar, lexis and functions

2.     Make announcements for selected and related workplace situations

3.     Prepare and deliver oral presentations using appropriate language for presentations

4.     Develop and demonstrate public speaking skills for a variety of formal situations

1: Workplace Meetings (1)

Participating in a Meeting

In this unit, the participant will learn to participate effectively at meetings through the use of appropriate grammar, lexis and functions.

 

2: Workplace Meetings (2)

Managing a Meeting

In this unit, the participant will learn to manage and lead discussions in work-related meetings

 

3: Making Formal Announcements

In this unit, the participant will learn how to prepare concise verbal workplace-related announcements, such as introducing new employees, making employee achievement announcements, and making formal public declarations.

 

4: Conduct Information Briefings

In this unit, the participant will learn how to use effective and precise language to deliver information briefings related to work context.

 

5: Success with Presentations (1)

In this unit, the participant will acquire techniques in planning and preparing an informative presentation.

 

6: Success with Presentations (2)

In this unit, the participant will be given the opportunity to deliver an informative presentation.

 

7: Impactful Public Speaking (1)

In this unit, the participant will learn about key factors that contribute towards delivery of outstanding speeches.

 

8: Impactful Public Speaking (2)

In this unit, the participant will be given the opportunity to prepare and deliver a speech by applying the skills and techniques introduced in this course.
